Understanding where and when neuromodulation takes places in the brain is essential in understanding how the brain functions. New imaging tools are being developed and improved to visualize the process of neuromodulation at (sub)cellular level in intact brain tissue. In this session I will layout why we need those new tools and present a novel biosensor that we developed to visualize cAMP/protein kinase (PKA) activity.
I'm intrigued by how information processing in networks of neurons shape our behavior. To study these networks we need to understand how they are build up, relay information between and within neurons and how this processing is modulated.
For my PhD dissertation I studied the role of developmental proteins in the mature brain and in relation to febrile seizures at UMCU/UU with Profs. Pasterkamp and Burbach, Drs. Ramakers and de Graan. Here I discovered that these developmental proteins can have great influence on how a newly born neuron integrates into an adult neuronal network. Establishing that proteins essential for neurodevelopment retain important functions in the adult brain.
