Elsken van der Wall (1960) has studied medicine at the University of Utrecht and subsequently specialized in internal medicine at the University Medical Center of Utrecht.
In the Dutch Cancer Institute / Het Antoni van Leeuwenhoekhuis in Amsterdam she further specialized in medical oncology while performing research that resulted in her PhD degree on ‘high-dose chemotherapy in solid tumors’ in 1995. From 1995 till 2003 she held a position as medical oncologist at the department of medical oncology at the VU Medical Center in Amsterdam. During this time she spend 14 months as a basic scientist at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Institute at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions (JHMI) in Baltimore, USA . Following her stay at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Institute she became part-time associate professor at JHMI which position she still helds.
In 2003 she was appointed full professor of medicine at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU) and head of the specialization program in internal medicine. In addition,

He performed his graduate research in Molecular Microbiology at UU and received his Ph.D. in 1991 with his thesis entitled: "Biogenesis of outer membrane protein PhoE of Escherichia coli K-12: studies on protein conformation” He worked as NWO postdoctoral fellow in the Biochemistry and Biophysics laboratory with Prof. dr. Linda Randall at Washington State University in Pullman, USA on protein folding. In 1992, he became Fellow of the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences of the Netherlands and assistant professor at Molecular Microbiology at the UU and worked till 2003 on bacterial protein and lipid transport and subsequently on fungal infection due to Cryptococcus and since 2010 due to Aspergillus

I'm intrigued by how information processing in networks of neurons shape our behavior. To study these networks we need to understand how they are build up, relay information between and within neurons and how this processing is modulated.
For my PhD dissertation I studied the role of developmental proteins in the mature brain and in relation to febrile seizures at UMCU/UU with Profs. Pasterkamp and Burbach, Drs. Ramakers and de Graan. Here I discovered that these developmental proteins can have great influence on how a newly born neuron integrates into an adult neuronal network. Establishing that proteins essential for neurodevelopment retain important functions in the adult brain.

The blood–brain barrier (BBB) is a complex multicellular structure forming a protective layer of tightly joined polarized cells, that separate the central nervous system (CNS) from the systemic circulation. To break down this barrier a variety of approaches of drug delivery into the brain exist, but unfortunately they mostly cause severe side effects. Hence, the overall goal is to find an appropriate way of a non-invasive and highly efficient targeted drug delivery into the brain. We are currently investigating a new harmless approach of nanobody (NB)-mediated receptor internalization and subsequent directed transcytosis within polarized brain endothelial cells (BECs). We use phage selection to receive NBs, which are targeting the ectodomain of the heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF) receptor, that is known to be transcytosed and constitutively expressed at the cell surface on the abluminal side of BECs.

My research group at the Department of Biology investigates the immune system of plants and how this interacts with the root-associated microbiome to optimize plant health. As Scientific Director of the Institute of Environmental Biology, I represent the green life sciences in the Utrecht life sciences community.
